I was the moderator of a panel with Tom Raworth and some German poets in Basel a few years ago. The issue was “poetry and translation”. Unfortunately, Tom had little to say, leaving the rest of the lurch. And the organizer of the event decided it was all my fault (even though I had been asked to do it 36 hours in advance), so I’ve never done anything for that organizer again. Oh well.
I’ve never had a personal experience with Hayes, but I love his work! I’ve used poems from “American Sonnets …” in an introductory course on poetry for a few years now.
Ha... Tom R came to read at UEA once, just after I had started teaching. He read extremely fast to a sports hall of students and then rebuffed their questions about what it meant. But some were inspired nevertheless. We have also been teaching Hayes' sonnets on a first-year module for the last few years -- a great poetry book to give students moving from school to university.
I really like tom Raworth! I will get my collected down now and have a bit of a read, thank you
Always something sharp and new to find in Raworth!
Tom Raworth isn’t a poet I know, but I’m immediately excited by his work. I’ll go look him up.
I think you'll like him a lot! One of my favourites is Logbook, a prose poem.
